She was born on June 11, 1938, to Henry Decorah and Edna Rave in Winnebago, NE. Henry Decorah later married Marie Crowe, who helped raise Vera. The family of nine children (Merle, Henry, Dwayne, Orville, Ronald, Vivian, Reva, Vera, and Marilyn) lived in Albert Lea area and settled in St. Paul, MN. Vera married McKinley Kingbird and they made their home in the Battle River area on the Red Lake Reservation. Their blended family grew to include and welcome ten children. Vera and McKinley attended numerous pow-wows in the United States and Canada, and there began Vera's life long love of dancing. Vera became a champion traditional woman's dancer. Vera made many friends, and adopted many sons and daughters while traveling the pow-wow trail. She was not only known for her love of dancing, but her distinct laugh that could be heard throughout the powwow grounds. After the loss of her husband McKinley, Vera wanted to remain in the Bemidji area where she continued to raise her family and follow the powwow trail. Vera's family, her powwow family, and her faith family were a source of strength for her, and helped her to endure the many challenges she faced in life. Vera became ill in 2018 and was diagnosed with melanoma. In time this illness caused her to retire from dancing and eventually enter the Cornerstone Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Vera was beloved by the nurses and care team at Cornerstone and was known for her humor and stubbornness.

Vera is survived by her daughter, Valerie (Paulo) DeCora Guimaraes of Rochester, MN, sons Foster DeCora of Stuttgart, Germany, Orville DeCora of Bemidji, MN, Mack (Christy) Kingbird of Bemidji, MN, Kevin Kingbird (special friend Angel) of Bemidji, MN, and Keveon Kingbird of Bemidji, MN, 15 Grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

We are comforted to know that she is at peace, greeted by her companion McKinley, her parents Henry and Marie, her brothers and sisters, all who were waiting for her arrival.

A sincere thanks to Cornerstone Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and the doctors and nurses at Sanford Hospital for their compassionate care of our Mother during her final days.
