MN Conservative Raising Money to Support Violent Extremists

MN conservatives have a history of emboldening extremists

October 25, 2021

Minnesota - Today, the Minnesota Reformer reported that conservative State Senator Mark Koran is encouraging his Facebook followers to donate to the legal defense fund of a Minnesota family facing felony charges in connection with the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“It’s appalling that Minnesota conservatives are once again emboldening violent extremists,” said Marissa Luna, executive director of Alliance for a Better Minnesota. “For months leading up to the U.S. Capitol attack, conservatives spread lies and sowed doubts about the outcome of the election. And even now, conservative candidates for Minnesota Governor Paul Gazelka and Scott Jensen continue to perpetuate election conspiracies. They need to be held accountable for the damage they’re continuing to do to our state, our nation, and our democracy.”

In November 2020, prominent Minnesota conservatives joined Donald Trump in questioning the results of the election and spreading baseless conspiracy theories.

In December 2020, conservative Reps. Pete Stauber, Jim Hagedorn, and Tom Emmer signed an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit asking the Supreme Court to overturn the results of the 2020 elections.

On January 6, 2021, while chaos erupted in Washington D.C., a second group of Trump supporters, including some conservative Minnesota legislators, gathered in St. Paul where they threatened violence against Governor Tim Walz and claimed there would be casualties.

Following Trump supporters’ attack on the U.S. Capitol, Minnesota conservative Reps. Michelle Fischbach and Jim Hagedorn objected to the electoral college vote for President Joe Biden. And Rep. Pete Stauber doubled down on election conspiracy theories.

In April 2021, conservative candidate for Minnesota Governor Paul Gazelka advanced legislation in the Minnesota Senate to restrict same-day voter registration, perpetuating election conspiracies. And conservative Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Scott Jensen has repeatedly promoted 2020 election conspiracies.
