Phyllis Lorraine Sumner, Wasay Makwa Ikwe “Lightning Bear Woman” 93, of Red Lake, MN passed away surrounded by family Sunday, October 17, 2021 at the Red Lake Hospital in Red Lake, MN

Memorial Services will be held at 1:00pm, Friday, October 22, 2021 at the Little Rock Community Center in Red Lake, MN. A wake will begin at 2:00pm, Thursday, October 21, 2021, at the Little Rock Community Center, and will continue until the time of the service. Interment will be at the St. Mary’s Mission Catholic Cemetery in Red Lake, MN under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji

She was born on June 1, 1928, the daughter of Reinhard “Peanuts” and Matilda “Tillie” Holthusen. She attended school in Pipestone, MN and Red Lake, MN. She achieved her GED after leaving school. She raised a family, was also a foster parent for many years, and was an amazing provider; she was a Master Gardener, she also was talented at canning, hunting, fishing, smoking fish, baking, and cooking. She also enjoyed fun with family and friends. She played softball up to the age of 57, she enjoyed going to the Casino to play Keno, and playing on the computer where she enjoyed saving and sharing recipes. She loved to play piano and the accordion, right up until she couldn’t hold the accordion up anymore.

24 Grandchildren, 63 Great-Grandchildren,

49 Great-Great Grandchildren,

numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and her beloved dog Bungee.

She was preceded in death by her mother, her husband George Sumner, children Allen F. English Jr., Dale English Sr., Joseph Sumner, Gary Sumner, Connie Sumner, Kevin Sumner, siblings Emily Holthusen, Ethel Wilkins, Marcella Ostlund, and Ardella Bailey.

Active Pallbearers will be: Ron Cobenais Sr., Kevin Sumner Sr., George Sumner, Delwyn English Sr., Allen D. English Sr., Allen D. English Jr., Alex English, Aaron English, and all her Great-Grandsons.
