Michael Joseph Howard, 61, of Cass Lake, Minnesota passed away Monday, October 4, 2021 at the St Mary's hospital in Duluth, Minnesota with family by his side. Mike was born August 25, 1960 in Cass Lake, Minnesota, the son of Thomas and Stella Howard of Inger.

In his younger years Mike loved to play ball – baseball, basketball, softball you name it he played it. He used to trap for mink with his father, hunt and fish. Mike harvested wild rice with his father for many many years until the death of his father. Mike attended Deer River Schools, graduating in 1978. After school Mike joined the US Army/Reserves and served in Germany and was stationed at Fort Knox. During the time Mike served he enjoyed receiving mail from his Mother and his nephew Victor. After his honorable discharge Mike worked for the Leech Lake Reservation, Leech Lake Gaming and the Leech Lake Housing Authority and was currently employed by the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Constituent Services. Mike took pride in his work and was very knowledgeable/skillful in carpentry, plumbing, HVAC systems and electrical. If Mike had an issue completing a job he was assigned he would "Google" it to find a solution. Mike would also go to the Sanitation site to search for parts for the various jobs that needed to be done. Mike enjoyed watch the Minnesota Viking and the Minnesota Twins and going to the Casino (especially elder's day). Mike enjoyed watching "Life Below Zero", "Yukon Gold", "Naked and Afraid" and "The Shameless series".

Mike played softball for "The Hawks" and also played darts where he earned the name (Tootsie Roll) and was a member of the (Granny Squad Dart Team) and also would be called (Big Daddy). Mike started singing karaoke at the local bar and his singing would continue at his kitchen table with his wooden spoon and bent up whisk singing to one of his favorite tunes "Never Been to Spain" many times after the bar would close down.

In Mike's later years he enjoyed taking family vacations to Disney World and Las Vegas and many Dart tournaments to name a few.

Mike enjoyed watching his son Nate play basketball and was always in the stands cheering him on. He enjoyed watching his daughter Nichelle compete in gymnastics and never missed any of her meets. Mike took on the responsibility of caring for and loving Scottie and Olivia. As soon as his ("Little Boss") Olivia began to talk she called him Dad.

Preceded in death by his Dad and Mom Thomas and Stella Howard and his son Mikey Howard, Sister in Law Laura Howard, his Niece Jacklyn Howard, his Father in Law Gilbert Starr, numerous aunts, uncles and other family members.

Pallbearers: Lucas White, Jon Wright, Josh Hare, Layne Miller, Reggie Wind, Rod Northbird. Alternate Dave Jones Sr. Honorary Pallbearers: Hubert Braman, George Rea, Pat Finn, Cliff "Bee-zob" Cloud, Dale Church, Wally Holstein, Kenny Fahlstrom, Brenda Northbird and all his family and friends.

Survived by the love of his life Cathy Howard of Cass Lake, MN. His children: Nathan Howard of Walker, MN., Nicholas Howard (Chelsea) of Minneapolis, MN., Nichelle Howard of Cass Lake, MN., Step Daughter Nicole Northbird, grandchildren Scott White Jr. & Olivia White and his Mother in Law Marilyn Littlewolf of Cass Lake, MN. Siblings: Thomas (Sharon) Howard of Ball Club MN, Ron Howard of Inger MN, Leonard (Carrie) of Inger, MN, Jim Howard of Inger, MN and his sister Dorothy (Bernard) Robinson of Inger, MN. With always a smile and a good word for everyone, Mike will be cherished and missed by everyone who knew him.
