Steven Joseph Defoe of Sawyer MN, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at 38 years of age. He was born on September 29th, 1982, in Duluth MN, to Steven Defoe and Shelly Martin.

Steven was an enrolled member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. His career path took him to the Natural Resources Department where he worked on vehicles and tended the forest. He also served as a Wildland Firefighter for many years, when he would travel abroad to different states, signing up for as many fire details as he possibly could. Deprived of the blessings of children, Steven poured his heart into his brothers James, Dustin, and Ryan, his stepchildren Crystal and Timothy, and especially his nieces Jaykelah, Jadayah, and Jaleah. In life, Steven was a joy to be around, always sharing his wisdom, time, heart, and humor with those closest to him. In death, Steven will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Steven was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father Steven Defoe; and younger brother James Blacketter IV. He is survived by his mother Shelly Martin (Kevin Hren); Father figure James Blacketter III; two brothers Dustin Blacketter (Caroline Blacketter), and Ryan Blacketter; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Evening visitation will be held Thursday, July 29th, 2021, at Nelson Funeral Care from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Visitation will resume on Friday, July 30, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service also at Nelson Funeral Care. Interment will follow at the Sawyer Cemetery.
