Seeking public comment on non-commercial plant gathering at Northern Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife Refuge

We at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service know that access to America’s public lands increases your quality of life and that national wildlife refuges across the country offer quality opportunities to connect with special places in a variety of ways. We’re looking for your opinion about possible expansions of those activities at Northern Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife Refuge.

Northern Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife Refuge is proposing to allow non-commercial plant gathering. This proposal also includes allowing a fruits of the soil harvest, which includes: berries, nuts, mushrooms, as well as plants that have ceremonial, medicinal and traditional uses by tribal members.

Beginning today and running through August 4, 2021 you’re invited to review and comment on the draft compatibility determination document that includes justifications and analysis for this potential new use. The draft compatibility determination document is available on our refuge website.

Please call the district office at 507-831-2220 with any questions you might have or if you would like the documents in an alternative format. We’re also reachable by email.

Northern Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife Refuge is headquartered in Odessa, Minnesota. Draft documents are available from the office at:
