John Michael Houchins

John Michael Houchins, age 44, "Waabanoobines" which means "Eastern Thunderbird" of Bemidji, Minnesota began his journey to the spirit world from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota on Tuesday, July 6th, 2021 with his wife by his side. He was born on May 20th, 1977 in Minneapolis, MN to Patricia (Cahill) and John Houchins.

John attended and graduated from Big Fork High School in 1995. He enlisted into the United States Army right out of high school and served as a Military Police. John was stationed at Fort McClellan in Alabama, at Fort Polk in Louisiana and was deployed to Kuwait during his eight years in the military. During his deployment, John was part of the protective service detail for Lieutenant General Tommy Franks. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, John became a Corrections Officer for the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office. John absolutely loved to fish and was very good at it, he also was a huge fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Dallas Mavericks but his favorite thing to do was spending time with his family.

Family that John is reunited with are his mother; Patricia Erven and brother; Joel Houchins.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife; Billie Jo Houchins of Bemidji, sons; Jude, Cully and Bennett, daughters; Quinn and Halle, special daughter; Bailey, father; John "Jack" (Darlene) Houchins, brother; Jeff (Ruthie) Houchins, sister; Judie (Loren) Klausen and many other relatives and friends.

An overnight wake and traditional service for John will begin at 7:00 pm. On Monday, July 12th and continue until his 9:00 a.m. send off and burial on Tuesday, July 13th all to be held at the Inger Community Center in Inger, MN. Naabekwa Liberty will be his Spiritual Advisor. Helping to lay John to rest are Jeff Houchins, Jude Chastek, Bennett Smith, Loren Klausen, Kaiden Klausen, Timothy Hall and Aric Porter. His honorary pallbearers are Charles Beck, Cory Grace, Brett Roush, Bryan Brewer and all his brothers that he served with. Interment will be in the Squaw Lake Cemetery at Squaw Lake, MN immediately following his services.
