PFAS chemicals found in Minnesota city's water is associated with adverse health conditions


The Bemidji Metropolis Council on June 21 accepted an incentive program for 19 property homeowners within the Bardwell Park neighborhood. To the west of the neighborhood is an space owned by the town with a number of wells offering water to the municipal system.

For greater than a decade, the town has been conscious of chemical compounds, generally known as PFAS (perfluorinated alkylated substances), in that space’s groundwater and subsequently, within the wells. The chemical compounds have been previously utilized in firefighting foams and certain originated on the adjoining Bemidji Regional Airport, which has been a coaching floor for native hearth departments.

In accordance with a press release from the Minnesota-based firm 3M, the developer of the chemical compounds, the kind of PFAS in Bemidji known as AFFF (aqueous movie forming foam). The particular chemical was developed by the US Navy within the early 1960s with help from 3M.
