Cheryl Lynn Smith, Nino Kaazi (Hummingbird Woman), age 42, of Redby, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Cheryl was born January 18, 1979, in Red Lake, Minnesota, to Gary Smith Sr. and Marion Smith. She grew up and attended school in Red Lake. After graduation, Cheryl worked as a slot attendant at the Seven Clans Casino and later trained to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. She worked for several years at the Red Lake Hospital, especially enjoying her work with the elders. She enjoyed helping people as is reflected in her work at the Red Lake Women's Shelter and the Red Lake Chemical Health program.

Cheryl was family oriented, having deep relationships with her children and her nieces and nephews. Her other interests included beading (she did beautiful work), doing hair and makeup on friends and family, working on cars with her dad before his passing, and going to the casino. For two years Cheryl fought a courageous battle with leukemia.

Cheryl will be greeted in the spirit world by her brother Gary Smith; father Gary Smith Sr.; mother Marion Rose Smith; grandparents Albert and Josephine Benais Sr. and Herbert and Deloris Smith; and nephew Conrad Smith Jr. She will be deeply missed by her children Damian Smith, Tanya Varney, Antonio Varney, Leriyah Varney, and Aaliyah Varney; grandson Miles Smith; brother Conrad Smith; and nieces and nephews: Stanley Donnell, Devine (Andrew) Donnell, Mya Donnell, Ava Donnell, Kingorlyn Donnell, Michael Donnell Jr., Marcus Smith, Jaylen Smith, Kota Beaulieu, Genna Smith and Lailah Dow; special sister Elice Varney; soulmate Leroy Varney; and many more family and friends who loved her.

A wake will begin on Thursday, June 17, 2021, at 3:00 PM at the Little Rock Community Center, and will continue until her service on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at 11:00 AM. Casketbearers will be Antonio Varney, Adrian Sayers, Quinton Sayers, Luke Lajeunesse, Hunter Beaulieu, Giles Strong, Damian Smith and David Smith. Honorary casketbearers will be Shirley, Nicole, Tanya, Leriyah, Devine, Esther, Arianna, Lorr, Nora, and Elice. Burial will follow St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Red Lake, MN.
