Grants Available to Publicly Owned Historic Properties for Preservation-related Projects

Applications are now being accepted for the State Capital Projects Grants-in-Aid Program. Local or county governmental units, cities, school districts or other public entities, can receive a minimum matching grant of $10,001 to help offset the costs associated with capital projects for public buildings. The application deadline is May 28, 2021.

Publicly-owned properties like courthouses, city halls, schools and museums are often the foundation of many communities, bringing a sense of identity, place, and memory to residents. (Pictured at right is Hastings City Hall).

Preserving these places requires daily care and occasional large investments. The State Capital Projects Grants-in-Aid Program is designed to assist with large preservation projects including, restoration, rehabilitation, preservation, and building systems and accessibility projects.

The competitive grant program is open to properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places, or determined to be eligible for listing in the National Register by the State Historic Preservation Office.

In the 2020 Fifth Special Session, the Minnesota Legislature and Governor approved funding in the Capital Budget Bill for the State Capital Projects Grants-in-Aid County and Local Preservation grants program administered by the Minnesota Historical Society.
