For the first time since 2005 the Cass Lake-Bena Panthers will be playing in the State Girls Basketball Tournament. The Panthers punched their ticket to state with a 65-55 win over the Stephen-Argyle Storm Friday night in Thief River Falls.

Stephen-Argyle grabbed an early 8-5 lead, but the Panthers would go on a 15-0 run to take a 20-8 lead and never looked back.

Four Cass Lake-Bena players scored in double figures with Junior Taryn Frazer leading the way with 19 points. Kailee Fineday added 13 points, Krisalyn Seeyle 12 points and eighth grader Gabby Fineday 11 points for the Panthers. Amira Laduke added 9 points for Cass Lake-Bena as the Panthers will take a 17-5 overall record into the State Tournament.

Junior Riley Mooney led the Storm with 23 points and 12 rebounds as Stephen-Argyle ends their season with 17-4 record. Mooney also had a big night at the free throw line as she made 12 of her 13 attempts at the stripe. Grace Carlson added 17 points and 6 boards for Stephen-Argyle.

Both teams had lost in the Sections 8A Quarterfinals last year with Cass Lake-Bena losing to Red Lake and Stephen-Argyle falling to Red Lake County Central in 2020.

The Storm made a run in the second half when they scored 12 straight points to draw to within six points at 58-52. But then Stephen-Argyle turned the ball over on their next three possessions to seal the outcome.

Cass Lake-Bena will now wait to see who they will face in the Quarterfinals of the State Tournament which begins next week at a yet to be determined site. Both teams should be competitive next year as both squads graduate two players each this season.

"It's a really good feeling," Panthers head coach Martin Wind said after the win. "We've been working all year for this. It's been 16 years since the last time we went to the state tournament. My dad was coaching then, so it's a really special moment doing that."

The Panthers have qualified for their fourth state tournament in program history, to go along with trips in 1984, 1998 and 2005.
