Minnesota School District Agrees to $300,000 Settlement in Transgender Locker Room Case

The Anoka-Hennepin School District has agreed to pay a $300,000 settlement with a former student after the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled against the district last fall when the student sued because she had not been allowed to use the boys’ locker room. The district also agreed to adopt a “policy to allow every student to use all facilities consistent with their gender identity.”

The student, identified as N.H., is female and identifies as male. When she expressed discomfort at the idea of using the girls' locker room, the school district provided an enhanced privacy changing area in an effort to accommodate her without compromising the privacy of other students. In response, N.H.’s mother sued the school district and in September of last year, the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 against the Anoka-Hennepin school district.

ACLU’s attorney David McKinney said he hopes the $300,000 settlement “puts every other school district in Minnesota on notice.”
