Red Lake Warriors upset Win-E-Mac 46-44 and advance in Section 8A Tournament

Warriors will travel to Cass Lake to take on the top-ranked Panthers

Erskine, MN - Free throws really do win or lose games and that was the difference on the scoreboard in the Quarterfinal Round of the Section 8A Boys Tournament on Saturday evening.

The game started off great for the Red Lake Warriors jumping out to a 8-1 lead but once the Win E Mac Patriots were able to settle in they were right back into the game. Right before the intermission the Patriots had a seven point lead 26-19 and they had every bit of the momentum until Red Lake Senior DJ Holthusen converted on a four point play making the halftime score 26-21.

In the second half of the game the story was free throw shooting. The Patriots stayed aggressive and got to the free throw line however, they missed their first eight attempts from the line, while Red Lake made four of their first five. DJ Holthusen fouled out with nine minutes to play in the game and Win E Mac was able to take advantage by staying aggressive but they couldn't convert from the free throw line shooting five of sixteen in the second half and ten of twenty-three for the game.

The game came down to the final possessions, Red Lake Sophomore Cade Bealieu was at the line to try and make it a four point game with four seconds remaining but he went one of two. Gavin Walker then got the offensive rebound with time to get up a final shot, looked to outlet the pass up court but it was intercepted by Red Lake ending the game. Red Lake advances to the semi-final round of the Boys Section 8A tournament and will travel to Cass Lake-Bena on Tuesday to take on the top seeded Panthers.
