George Gerald Gibbs

May 21, 1979 ~ February 8, 2021 (age 41)

George Gerald Gibbs, age 41, formerly of Redby, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, February 8, 2021.

George was born on May 21, 1979, in Bemidji, Minnesota, to Oliver "Jimmy" and Darlene (Jones) Gibbs. His family laughingly remembers his birth happening during the Red Lake takeover when the whole reservation was on lockdown. George grew up in Redby and attended high school in Red Lake. The youngest of six children, he spent his free time with his nieces and nephews who were his age. In his young adult years, George was involved in church community events, including travel with the Oak Hills Native American Outreach. He was very close to his father, taking care of him during his final years. The death of his father was hard for George, and he soon went to live with his sister in Bemidji.

George was a quiet man and kept to himself. His family who were close to him would say that, below the surface, he was a man who was very smart and knew a lot about life. He loved studying Bible history. He also loved listening to country music and watching the fights with his nephews.

George will be deeply missed by his sisters Lisa Lyons, Tina (Bob) Roybal, and Margaret Gibbs; brother Richard Gibbs; his aunt Delores Fineday; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; sister Ann Sumner; and nephews James Lee Gibbs, Justice White, and Dale White.

A wake for George will begin on Thursday, February 11, 2021, at 1:00pm, at the Red Lake Center and will continue until his service on Friday, at 1:00pm. Pastor Tom Pollock will officiate. Casketbearers will be Jeremiah Defoe, Mike Defoe Jr., David Defoe, James Johnson, Joshua Johnson, Richard Johnson, Albert Johnson and Dayton Carlson. Alternates will be Terrell Defoe and Talant Defoe. Honorary casketbearers are Jerry Monster, Truman Beaulieu Jr., Jason Powell, Paul Straubel, Margaret Gibbs, Myron Clark, Joseph Gibbs, Leroy White III, Guy Johnson and Richard Johnson. Burial will follow in the Redby Community Cemetery.

Arrangements are being provided by Whispering Pines Funeral & Cremation Service, Walker, MN.
