Legacy Amendment Provides $361,000+ in Small Grants to Support History Projects Statewide

The Minnesota Historical Society is pleased to announce the newest recipients of 42 Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Small Grants ($10,000 and less), totaling $361,234 in 29 counties.

Small grants are awarded quarterly to help nonprofits, educational organizations, government units and federally recognized tribes to preserve and share Minnesota history. This cycle of awards was approved by the MNHS Executive Council on Dec. 10, 2020.

This state-funded program is made possible by the Legacy Amendment's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the vote of Minnesotans on Nov. 4, 2008. The Legacy Amendment supports efforts to preserve Minnesota land, water and legacy, including Minnesota history and cultural heritage.

Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Small Grant Recipients

Recipients of small grants ($10,000 and less) from the most recent small grants cycle are listed in alphabetical order below. Each project will preserve and enhance Minnesota’s cultural and historical resources. All grants are competitive and awarded according to program guidelines and criteria, as well as professional standards.

City of Columbia Heights, Columbia Heights, $9,750

To hire a qualified consultant to write a context study for the City of Columbia Heights.

Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, East Bethel, $10,000

To hire a qualified architect to conduct a condition assessment of the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Blue Earth County Historical Society, Mankato, $9,990

To add 111 rolls of microfilmed newspapers to make primary records more accessible to the public.

Brown County Historical Society, New Ulm, $8,982

To provide better organization of the museum collections, allowing for greater public access to the community’s historic resources.

Chippewa County Historical Society, Montevideo, $10,000

To hire a qualified and experienced security firm to evaluate the current level of museum security.

City of Maynard, Maynard, $10,000

To contract with qualified professionals to prepare construction documents for the preservation of the roof of the 1915 Maynard State Bank, listed in the National Register of Historic Places and used as the Maynard History Museum.

North Chisago Historical Society, Rush City, $6,240

To hire a qualified consultant to prepare a collections management policies and procedures document.

Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County, Moorhead, $7,920

To hire a qualified historian to complete an evaluation to determine eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places for the 1895 Rollag Schoolhouse.

Moorhead Legacy Education Foundation, Moorhead, $8,790

To hire a qualified historian to conduct primary source research on the history of Moorhead Area Public Schools.

Probstfield Farm Living History Foundation, Inc., Moorhead, $10,000

To hire a qualified consultant to develop exterior architectural drawings for reuse of the R.M. Probstfield House, built in 1868 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Cottonwood County Historical Society, Windom, $9,900

To hire a qualified professional to research lifestyles and recreation in Cottonwood County in preparation for an upcoming exhibit.

City of Cuyuna, Deerwood, $9,999

To hire a qualified historian to complete an evaluation to determine eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places for the 1909 Cuyuna City Hall.

To hire a qualified architect to conduct a condition assessment of the 1917 Danebod Folk School, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

To purchase a microfilm reader/printer/scanner to make microfilmed records more accessible to the public.

Stevens County Historical Society, Morris, $6,930

To digitize a collection of photo negatives, allowing for greater public access to this historic resource.

City of Winona, Winona, $6,000

To hire a qualified historian to complete an evaluation to determine eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places for the 1923 Winona Lake Park Bandshell.

About Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants

The Minnesota Historical Society received a legislative appropriation of $12.85 million for the 2020-2021 biennium for the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage (“Legacy”) Grants: $5,846,000 for FY2020 and $7,004,000 for FY2021.

Grants are available for history and historic preservation projects in two funding tiers. Small grants of $10,000 or less are awarded quarterly. The next small grant application deadlines are January 8, 2021 and April 9, 2021. Large grants of more than $10,000 are offered once a year. All grants are administered through a competitive process based on program guidelines, and professional standards and criteria.
