Steve Whitefeather, Sr.

Steve Edward Whitefeather, Sr., "Debiijigay-Miigizi" (Eagle Catcher) of the "Ogashkimanisii" (King Fisher) Clan, age 44, of Cass Lake, MN departed this life unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep on November 24, 2020.

Steve was born on December 25, 1975 in Bemidji, MN to Irene Mitchell and Leland Whitefeather. He attended Cass Lake-Bena School and went on to Leech Lake Tribal College. Steve enjoyed attending Pow Wows and sweats. He liked singing, dancing and loved to make people laugh. Family was important to Steve, and he looked forward to spending time with his mother, son and two granddaughters. Steve had health struggles and suffered from a brain injury. He felt his best when he could be outdoors wandering. He believed in Traditional ways and had a strong faith in the Creator. Steve had great respect and admiration for older individuals.

He is survived by his father, Leland Whitefeather, Sr .; siblings: Leland Whitefeather, Jr., Jolene Whitefeather and Tim Whitefeather; his son, Steve Whitefeather, Jr., as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas and Lucy Mitchell; his mother, Irene Mitchell and sisters, Birdena and Georgiana.

A traditional wake will begin at 1:00pm on Friday, December 4, 2020 at the Leech Lake Veterans Memorial Building and will continue until the service at 9:00am on Saturday, December 5, 2020. The Spiritual Leader will be Allen Hardy. He will be assisted by Verna Lucio, Sophie Bissonette and Leland Whitefeather. Casketbearers will be Mike Jones, Aaron Jones, Rupert Olson, Roger Durant, Brian Labou and Steve White. Honorary casketbearers will be Frank Raisch, Silas Blue, Jonathan Whitefeather, Markell Whitefeather, Willis Burnette and Stan Jones. Interment will be at Boy Lake Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Whispering Pines Funeral & Cremation Service of Walker, MN (www.whisperingpinesnorth.com).
