Mass Nationwide School Closures Loom as Coronavirus Cases Spike
November 19, 2020
Children, parents and educators are bracing for another round of mass school closures – if their schools had reopened for in-person learning at all – as coronavirus infections spike across the country with little to no additional guidance or support from the federal government.
Those working in K-12 education knew almost three weeks ago that this moment would arrive, as the country's biggest crises are quicker to present themselves in public schools than any other place. And that they did.
Officials in Boston suspended all in-person learning at the end of October as coronavirus rates climbed, after twice delaying the start of a phased-in return to classrooms – this in a state that had received accolades from public health officials for dutifully driving down its case loads over the summer.
