Pemberton, Barrett and Desjarlait win Red Lake School Board Elections

Terms will begin in January 2021

Red Lake Indian Reservation - It took longer than normal for the results to come in all elections this year, along with the results for some local races, but unofficially at almost 4 AM, it looked like newcomer Robert Pemberton Sr., incumbent Michael Barrett and incumbent Douglas "Jack" Desjarlait have won the 3 seats up for election this year on the Red Lake School Board. All terms are 4-year terms beginning in January 2021 to January 2025.

They will join Board members Roy Nelson, Barb Thomas, Robert McClain and Marcus Tyler to represent the seven-member Red Lake Board of Education.

Robert Pemberton Sr. had the most votes with 963 or 19.58% of the votes, followed by Michael Barrett receiving 946 or 19.24%, Jack Desjarlait had 845 and 17.18%, Patricia Neadeau received 729 or 14.82%, Chris Jourdain 729 or 14.78% and Tina Stately 703 and 14.29% of the vote.

Also on the ballot was SCHOOL DISTRICT QUESTION 1 (ISD #38), which passed 1707 yes votes, to 509 no votes. The board of Independent School District No. 38 (Red Lake) had proposed to increase its general education revenue by $1,343.00 per pupil. A portion of this referendum revenue authorization would replace the school district's prior authorization of $901.32 per pupil which is scheduled to expire after taxes payable in 2021. The proposed new referendum revenue authorization would increase each year by the rate of inflation and be applicable for ten years, commencing with taxes payable in 2022, unless otherwise revoked or reduced as provided by law. Shall the increase in the revenue proposed by the board of Independent School District No. 38 be approved?

The three top vote receivers will be sworn in at the Boards Reorganization Meeting in January 2021.
