Virtual learning: Mescalero Apache Tribe students, teachers, parents adapt to online class

MESCALERO, NM - Lucille Yuzos gestures to the visual family tree on the white board, pointing out the words for each family member in the Apache language. The tree is in full view of her laptop through which her students listen closely to her instruction.

Yuzos and the other teachers and staff members at Mescalero Apache Middle High School have adjusted to online instruction after weeks of virtual classes. After starting the semester on Sept. 8, both Mescalero Apache Middle High School and Mescalero Apache Elementary School have continued with online learning and intend to do so until further notice.

"It's a learning process for the teachers who have little-to-no technology (skills)," Mescalero Apache Middle High Principal Athena Trujillo said. "(For) kids (and) a lot of the families, technology is new to them... In this first week, we have a lot of calls from parents and kids because everything's so new, so we're trying to accommodate them."
