LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, BEMIDJI, MN: On Thursday, October 1, 2020, at approximately 1331 hours, the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office 911 center received a call originating from the 17000 block of Highway 89 northwest, reporting that they were concerned for a family member that was displaying erratic behavior and was armed with a pistol. During the call it was reported that this person began to discharge the weapon in an around the home.

As Deputies began to arrive on scene they found the subject walking on highway 89 near the home. Immediately the subject confronted Deputies, pointing the weapon at them and discharged the handgun. The subject with the handgun was identified as a person of interest from an earlier reported forced entry of a dwelling in the Wilton area where it was alleged that this person entered the home and took a loaded handgun and ammunition during the burglary. It had also been reported that the subject had made threats towards law enforcement.

As Deputies continued to arrive on scene they immediately established a perimeter and began negotiations to surrender the weapon, but as they did so, the subject would charge at their positions with the gun raised and would fire the gun in their direction. The subject then walked back towards his residence, randomly firing the gun, where he then confronted two Deputies on the roadway. One of the Deputies was able to deploy a less lethal Taser at the subject. After the less lethal deployment of the Taser, Deputies were able to take the subject into custody without further incident. He was taken into custody at 2:04 pm. No law enforcement officer discharged a firearm throughout the incident.
