Free Computer Distribution at Minneapolis CareerForce Location

St. Paul – Dozens of Minnesotans who need computer and internet access to search and apply for jobs received free computer packages today from PCs for People at the CareerForce location on Lake Street in Minneapolis. The computer packages include a refurbished donated desktop PC and monitor, as well as a webcam, keyboard, mouse, Wi-Fi adaptor, cords and basic software programs.

“We recognize that not having access to a computer or the internet makes getting a job during the pandemic very difficult,” said Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) Deputy Commissioner Hamse Warfa. “That’s why CareerForce is focused on addressing the digital divide that keeps many Minnesotans looking for work now from connecting with the employers who need them.”

“The City of Minneapolis has collaborated with PCs for People since 2018 in donating city-owned computers to be refurbished and redistributed in Minneapolis,” said City of Minneapolis Chief Information Officer Fadi Fadhil. “We are continuing and growing these efforts in partnership with other local businesses, technology partners, and Minneapolis Public Schools to address challenges of the digital divide and inequality across the city.”

“It’s our mission to provide individuals and families with the life-changing benefits of owning their own computer,” said Mary Lucic, Community Outreach & Fundraising Manager for PCs for People. “Companies who donate usable computers make our work possible while helping keep e-waste out of landfills.”

Today’s computer distribution was sponsored by the City of Minneapolis and Lovitude, through its financial support. CareerForce staff and partners helped run the event, which was held in the parking lot outside the CareerForce location at 777 East Lake Street.

The CareerForce location was damaged during unrest this spring. While most of the damage has been repaired, the building remains closed to in-person service due to COVID-19 health and safety restrictions. However, career exploration and job search services are available over the phone and online at CareerForceMN.com.

The City of Minneapolis has donated its end-of-lease computers since 2009. Since then, the city has donated nearly 3,500 computers to be refurbished and provided at low or no cost to those in need.
