Planned Execution Of Navajo Man Highlights Differences Between U.S. Law And Tribal Sovereignty

On Wednesday, Lezmond Mitchell is scheduled to be executed in Indiana.

There’s no dispute about the crimes Mitchell committed. He was convicted of murdering Alyce Slim and her 9-year-old granddaughter, Tiffany Lee, in 2001.

But because Mitchell is a member of the Navajo Nation and the tribe opposes the execution, the situation highlights the differences between U.S. law and tribal sovereignty.

To talk about those broader issues, The Show spoke with Karen Jarratt-Snider, chair of the department of applied Indigenous studies at Northern Arizona University.
