AG Ellison names Luz María Frías as Deputy Attorney General

30-year veteran of legal, public, community service

July 16, 2020 (SAINT PAUL) — Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced today that he has named Luz María Frías as Deputy Attorney General in the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office. Ms. Frías, who will begin on August 10, will step into the role left by former Deputy Attorney General Christie Eller, who retired on July 1 after a nearly 42-year career with the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office.

“Luz Frías is a highly skilled attorney, manager, policy strategist, and public servant. She’s dedicated her 30-year career to putting the power of the law, nonprofits, and government in service to community and improving people’s lives. She’s also been leading on race and gender equity long before most people grasped the urgency of it. She’s a great fit for the Attorney General’s Office and will help me push forward our work to help Minnesotans afford their lives and live with dignity and respect,” Attorney General Ellison said.

Ms. Frías most recently served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of YWCA Minneapolis, where she was responsible for leading the strategy and operations of the organization’s five areas of commitment to the community, a budget of $23 million, and a staff of more than 500. Prior to YWCA Minneapolis, she served as the Vice President for Community Impact at The Minneapolis Foundation. She also served as External Affairs Director for the City of Saint Paul, as well as the City’s inaugural Director of the Human Rights and Equal Economic Opportunity Department, both under former Mayor Chris Coleman. Ms. Frías has also served as a Family Court Magistrate for the State of Minnesota, Hearing Examiner for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, and Chief Executive Officer and Chief Legal Officer of Centro Legal. She holds master’s and law degrees from the University of Iowa.

She is a founding member and former president of the Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association and a former president of the Minnesota Women Lawyers Association. She has served the community in many other roles, including on the boards of the Infinity Project, the Council on Crime and Justice, the Saint Paul Foundation, and the Minnesota Historical Society, among many others.

“I’m excited to join Attorney General Ellison and the talented team of attorneys and staff who are fighting for the people of Minnesota and building an equitable community that works for everyone,” Ms. Frías said.
