Winnebago Tribal Council members removed from office after refusing hair sample test

WINNEBAGO, Neb. — Two members of the Winnebago Tribal Council have been removed from their post, according to the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.

Two council members, Victoria Kitcheyan and Melton Frenchman, had refused a hair follicle drug test, saying that their hair is tied to their spirituality.

"A lot of people believe that our hair is tied to our spirituality, our spirits. A lot of people will try to guard that," said Michelle LaMere, who stood in protest outside the council chambers earlier this week over the matter. "There's a lot of beliefs in, even brushing your hair to save that and to bury it and just to keep it safe so that you are guarding your own spirit."
