Minneapolis mayor, police chief announce tighter body-camera rules

Jeff Wheeler – Star Tribune

A Minneapolis police officer tested out a body camera before the department adopted them in 2017. A new policy prevents Minneapolis officers involved in critical incidents, including those involving deadly force, from reviewing body camera footage before completing an initial police report for the incident.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Medaria Arradondo on Sunday announced tighter rules for reviewing officers' body cameras that they say will provide more transparency and accountability.

They're the latest moves the city is taking toward police reform amid calls for sweeping changes to law enforcement following the killing of George Floyd by police.

On Sunday, Frey and Arradondo called the changes the "first of what will be a series of new public safety policy reforms."
