Columbus statues still standing in namesake city while others are defaced, toppled

The legacy of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus is being erased from cities across the nation.

Statues of Columbus have been beheaded, toppled or plunged into bodies of water in Boston; St. Paul, Minnesota; Camden, New Jersey; and Richmond, Virginia, in a rebuke of his history as a colonizer and slaver and his “discovery” of America.

Here in Columbus, the largest American city bearing his name, three of the explorer’s likenesses remain intact. Statues stand outside Columbus City Hall, the Statehouse and Columbus State Community College.
