Sault Tribe pardons members from paycheck premiums

SAULT STE. MARIE — Sault Tribe members will now not be mandated to pay their premiums to easy some of the financial strain of the coronavirus.

According to a press release, the tribal chairperson and Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Board of Directors acknowledges this is a difficult time for everyone. To help relieve some of this burden, the Sault Tribe will pay the employee portion of health, life and long-term disability premiums for all team members — governmental, casino, housing and EDC.

“In these unprecedented times, we must remember the life blood of our Sault Tribe organization is our employment team members,” said tribal chairperson, Aaron Payment. “Paying our team members while they are unable to work during the COVID-19 pandemic and now fully covering the costs of their health, life and disability insurance shows our care and concern for their wellbeing.”

Until further notice, team members will no longer see the premium for health, life and long-term disability deducted from their paychecks. The board would like to thank all team members for their dedication as a Sault Tribe team member. Team members should contact their immediate supervisor with any questions or concerns.
