PRIMARY FUNCTION

Responsible for assisting and providing awareness and support for individuals and families. Native Connections addresses suicide prevention, substance abuse prevention, and reducing effects of historical or inter-generational trauma. Reports to Director, full-time position with benefits, salary; DOQ.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

• Assists in suicide prevention activities that support awareness and intervention.

• Provides individual, group, and family supportive services to youth, ages 11-24 years old, and families within the Red Lake Reservation.

• Provides counseling services in an environment that is culturally sensitive, nurturing, and non-judgmental to youth and their families.

• Works closely with the Behavioral Health workers in providing services to youth not in attendance at Red Lake School District.

• Plans and conducts group sessions with identified youth as needed.

• Provides education on life management skills, suicide prevention, crisis intervention, parenting skills, anger management, behavioral and conflict resolution, prevention of physical and sexual abuse to individuals and families, conducts outreach and peer mediation.

• Maintains individual student and family files to include: Consent Forms, Release of Information Forms, Individual Treatment Plans, Progress notes, Psychological and Educational information and miscellaneous correspondence to workers, parents, and school personnel.

• Provides support, assistance, and educational services as assigned.

• Collaborates with other community behavioral health agencies and colleagues to provide services and identify referrals.

• Participates in regular behavioral health meetings, suicide prevention meetings, school meetings, and other meetings or functions as assigned.

• Works with youth to formulate messages of wellness and use of appropriate media to convey positive messages of strength and hope.

• Keeps informed of cultural resources to assist youth to connect with customs and traditions which foster healing and wellness.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Psychology or Counseling or some College Education combined with experience in counseling youth and families.

• Ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment and software, including word processing, data base management, spreadsheet applications and electronic mail.

• Ability to work independently and with limited supervision.

• Skilled in effective and diplomatic oral and written communication.

• Knowledge of Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians culture, traditions, and values.

• Possess excellent working knowledge of programs such as Chemical Health, Family & Children Services and Mental Health, Corrections and Rehabilitation Program operation(s) for youth.

• Possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of various economic, educational and cultural backgrounds.

• Proof of valid Minnesota Driver's License and auto insurance for business related travel.

• Employment contingent upon successfully passing Pre-Employment Drug/Alcohol Test and Background Check
