The Red Lake Warriors withstood a furious rally from the Fosston Greyhounds to earn a berth in the Section 8A Championship game on Friday night. With Red Lake leading by 19 points at 38-19, the Greyhounds closed the first half with a 6-0 run and trailed the Warriors 38-25 at halftime.
The Greyhounds would eventually get to within one point at 47-46, but the Warriors responded with a quick 8-0 run to take back command of the game.
Gerika Kingbird led the Warriors with 27 points as Red Lake improved to 20-9 overall. The Warriors started the season at 2-5 but have won 16 of their last 17 games.
Freshman Katelyn Vesledahl led Fosston with 26 points as the top seeded Greyhounds end their season at 21-8. It was the third straight year that Red Lake eliminated Fosston from the Section 8A Tournament.
The Warriors didn't shoot a free throw until 5:30 remained in the game while Fosston struggled at the line by going 7 of 18.
Red Lake will now face the Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gators at 7:00 pm Friday, March 6th in Thief River Falls (96.7 FM). The Gators defeated the Warriors 67-51 when the two teams met at the Northland Holiday Tournament in Thief River Falls on December 9th.
B/G-MR will take a 20-9 record into the finals on Friday after their 67-56 win over Red Lake County Central on Monday night.
Red Lake has won the Section 8A Championship two of the last three years including last year.
