A Message from Northern Peace Funeral Home

March 30, 2020

Dear Families of the Red Lake Nation,

Over the past seven years we have not only been honored, but blessed to serve your families and assist with your loved ones. Jenelle, Becky and I take great pride with everyone we get a chance to know and help with. We've enjoyed a lot of laughs, a lot of tears and a lot of learning traditional ways together. This is why it saddens me to have to write this letter. We actually reached a point a while ago where the costs of supplies, services and other expenses to help families from Red Lake, to have a meaningful funeral for their loved ones, became more expensive than what the Red Lake Funeral fund provides. We have approached the tribal council on a few different occasions to increase these funds so that we are able to continue serving you, with the latest request at the end of December of 2019. Since we haven't had a response to any of our previous requests, we have no other option but to stop our serving Red Lake members. As of April 15, 2020, we will no longer assist with families from Red Lake unless families decide on direct cremation with a memorial service held at a later time, there is an insurance policy available to cover the costs, families pay the difference out of pocket at the time of arrangements or until the Red Lake burial fund is increased. Again, we are sorry that we are having to write this letter. Please understand that we have no choice.

Thank you,

Jarrod T. Mankie

Owner of Northern Peace Funeral Home
