PRIMARY FUNCTION
As part of the Gitigaanike Food Initiative Farmer Training and Incubation Project, Farmer-Trainees are responsible for various seasonal activities in the Training Garden and on the future Incubator Farm, including preparation for planting, taking care of crops, harvesting, and food distribution. Farmer-Trainees are also required to complete the Farm Business Management Curriculum to apply to their hands-on training. Reports to Farm Incubator Coordinator, wage range: $11.40 to 14.25 per hour (approx. 900 hours per year).
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
• Attend specified Farm Business Management Curriculum classes as scheduled.
• Work in the Training Garden applying classroom training from the Farm Business Management Curriculum to the planting and care of produce.
• Develop and prepare the Incubator Farm by installing fencing, setting up the irrigation system, preparing soil, selecting farm equipment, and designing the planting layout, rotation, and succession.
• Prepare and handle produce according to safe food handling standards.
• Harvest crops from the Training Garden.
• Assist with the selling of harvested produce at the Gitigaanike Farmers Market and mobile farmer's markets operating in the four Red Lake communities.
• Deliver harvested produce to established commercial customers.
• Prepare the Training Garden, Incubator Farm, and equipment for the winter.
• Graduate to the Incubator Farm to learn how to operate a small farm business.
• Work closely with the Farm Incubator Coordinator and Program instructors.
• Maintain effective communication with all members of the Project Team.
EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
• GED/High School Diploma
• Physically capable of handling job requirements
• Willing to work irregular hours as necessary
• Be reliable and dependable
• Team member and team building skills
• Native American preference
• Employment contingent upon successfully passing Pre-Employment Drug/Alcohol Test
