Coronavirus Wednesday update: 17 new MN cases despite limits on testing

Minnesota’s COVID-19 cases continue to climb, with 17 new cases reported Wednesday, despite limits on who can be tested for the coronavirus.

There are now 77 cases statewide. Anoka, Benton, Blue Earth, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Martin, Nicollet, Olmsted, Ramsey, Renville, Scott, Stearns, Waseca, Washington and Wright counties all have reported cases.

Most virus infections are in the metro. COVID-19 is believed to be spreading in the community in Ramsey, Hennepin and Dakota counties.

Since the outbreak began, Minnesota has tested 2,762, but that does not include tests done outside the state Department of Health laboratory.

Minnesota health officials remind the public the best way to prevent catching and spreading the virus is to wash your hands thoroughly and often, cover coughs and sneezes, don’t touch your face and stay home if you are sick.

Schools, restaurants, bars, pretty much anywhere people congregate have been closed by an emergency order by Gov. Tim Walz. Such “social distancing” measures are designed to slow the spread of the virus so it doesn’t overwhelm the state’s health care system.
