Walker-Hackensack-Akley Girls take Northwoods Conference with 70-67 win over Red Lake - P16

RED LAKE, MN – The Red Lake Lady Warriors hosted WHA on Saturday, February 22, 2020 to decide the Champions of the Northwoods Conference. Red Lake was 1st in the North and WHA was 1st in the South.

The teams had met up early in beginning of the season in Red Lake, with WHA getting the win 86-63.

As anticipated, the game started off quickly with the Lady Warriors putting 3 on the board, and another 2, followed by 4 from WHA.

This pace went on throughout the first half, with Red Lake leading by as much 11 at one point, for which WHA came back to within 6-points at the end of the first half, 31-25.

WHA took the lead at the 7:38 mark in the second half, and it wasn't until with 3:10 left that the score was knotted at 62-all. Red Lake had several chances to overtake WHA, but missed shots and fouls in the end hurt them.

Bri Raddite led all scorers for WHA with 27 points on the night, Megan Benjamin added 14 and Justine Day and Ally Sea each hit for 10.

Gerika Kingbird led Red Lake with 23, Autumn Holthusen added 22 and Kelanna McClain hit for 17.

The difference was pretty much free-throws, as WHA was 20 of 24 from the FT line, while Red Lake shot 7 of 15.

The win gave WHA the Northwoods Conference. It was also the second year in a row that the Lady Warriors lost the championship, but last year they ended up taking the Section 8A title and going to state. Red Lake had won the conference in the 2017-18 year, beating WHA 70-64.

WHA is now 25-2 and it was their 12 win in a row. Red Lake sets at 17-9 and the loss ended their 13th game winning streak.

The Lady Warriors will host Goodridge-Grygla on Thursday, February 27th in the first round of Section 8A, while WHA will host Nevis in their first round in Section 5A.
