Red Lake Nation College Switches to Virtual Classrooms to Mitigate COVID-19 Threat

(Red Lake, MN, March 12, 2020) In a statement sent to students, faculty and staff late Thursday, Red Lake Nation College (RLNC) President Dan King announced that all courses will be taught online beginning Monday, March 16 and continue through at least April 3, as a precautionary measure to protect against possible exposure to COVID-19. The statement comes just a day after the World Health Organization declared the repertory illness a global pandemic.

"The health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and our Red Lake Nation Tribal community are of utmost importance," said King. "Although there have been no reported cases of the disease in our area, we are taking this health risk seriously. Fortunately, RLNC already has emergency procedures in place, and the technology to switch from in-person to online virtual classrooms and back again whenever needed."

The RLNC campus will remain open with essential staff on site, while others employees will work from home whenever possible. All non-essential college-related travel has been suspended until further notice. The situation will be reassessed during the first week of April to determine whether or not these preventative measures will continue.

"Fear is not one of our Ojibwe values," said King. "Therefore, we will not live in fear. Instead, will live by our values of humility, truth, courage, honesty, respect, love, and wisdom. Therefore, we must be respectful and truthful with each other about these new health threats and live honestly with ourselves in sharing information and recognizing this as a very serious issue for all of us.

We need to face this health challenge with courage, wisdom, and love, and protect our most vulnerable members of our community – the sick and our Elders. We must do whatever we can to protect our community from this virus. This health crisis will pass and we will get through it."
