#3 Lady Warriors step up game to knock off #2 Cass Lake-Bena 73-69 to advance in Class A - Section 8 Girls Basketball Tournament - P2

Will face #1 Fosston Monday night at the REA in Thief River Falls at 7:45 PM

THIEF RIVER FALLS, MN – The Red Lake Lady Warriors had their work cut out for them in the second round of the Girls Section 8A Tournament, where they would be playing without one of their key players, Autumn Holthusen. Holthusen had 2 technical fouls called on her in Thursday night's game against Goodridge-Grygla resulting in a one game suspension.

But Coach Randy Holthusen's game plan called for the rest of the team to step-up their game and that was exactly what they did.

The girls ran hard and they ran fast, and by the end of the first half had built up a 42-32 lead.

At the start of the second half Cass Lake scored a quick 7-points to cut the deficit down before Red Lake answered, and by the 11:44 mark was in front by 11-points, 53-42.

With just 6:07 left in the game, the Lady Warriors led by thirteen, 62-49, but then Cass Lake came on strong and never gave up, fighting tooth and nail to trail by just 1-point, 63-62 with 2:26 remaining.

The game was tied at the 1:43 mark at 63-all, and Cass Lake went ahead with a freethrow. But Red Lake came right back with two quick baskets of their own, and again the Panthers came right back to come within one with less than a minute to play.

With .50 seconds left, some key freethrows by LaShaun Roy put the Lady Warriors on top by 5-points, but with just 3 seconds remaining, the Panthers trailed 72-69, and another key freethrow by Gerika Kingbird with just 2 seconds left, pretty much sealed the win for Red Lake.

Gerika Kingbird led the Warriors with 26 points in the contest, 19 in the first half, Kelanna McClain had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and LaShaun Roy also had 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Cass Lake's season ended at 20-8, while Red Lake moves to 19-9, but more importantly will go on to the next round against Fosston for the 8A East Championship.

Last year the Lady Warriors beat Fosston 58-47 to take the 8A East, and Stephen-Argyle 74-59 to take the 8A Championship and make the trip to state.

Game time is set for 7:45 PM on Monday, March 2, 2020 at the REA.

In other action on Saturday, Fosston narrowly defeated Clearbrook-Gonvick 47-43, #1 Warren-Alvarado-Oslo was upset by #4 Badger/GB-MR 58-54, and #2 Red Lake County Central beat #6 Stephen-Argyle Central 57-50.
