Minnesota IT Services Commissioner Visits Red Lake Council

In a historic first, Minnesota IT Services Commissioner Tarek Tomes travelled to Red Lake Nation to talk with the Tribal Council at the February 11, 2020 Council meeting. "I believe this is the first time a Commissioner of IT Services has been to the Red Lake Tribal Council," Commissioner Tomes stated. "I look forward to ways we can partner." Commissioner Tomes gave a brief overview of MNIT services, focusing on the technology services that are offered.

Along with the Commissioner was Dan Ross, Chief Geospatial Information Officer within MNIT Services. Mr. Ross discussed the possibility of expanding the LiDAR Geospatial program, aimed primarily at updating the existing databases of Minnesota landscape, into the Red Lake reservation boundaries. The Council had the opportunity to directly ask questions about the program.

Prior to meeting with the Council, Commissioner Tomes and Mr. Ross sat down with Deb Harmon, Director of IT for Red Lake Nation to talk more specifically about how MNIT services can assist Red Lake. Ms. Harmon gave a brief overview of the history of Red Lake IT. Topics included ways that Red Lake IT has interacted with MNIT services in the past, such as with TANF and Family and Children's Services.
