Lyle Goodwin

July 08, 1945 - February 07, 2020

Lyle “Pokey John” Goodwin, age 74, of Naytahwaush, MN, died Friday, February 7, 2020, at his home.

Lyle James Goodwin, along with his twin sister, Lois, were born in Cass Lake, MN, on July 8, 1945, to George and Florence (Turner) Goodwin. He grew up in the Mahnomen area where he graduated from Mahnomen High School. Following high school, Lyle attended Haskell Institute in Lawrence, KA, and furthered his culinary and baking skills. He moved to the Twin Cities area and began working as a full-time baker. On August 16, 1980, Lyle was united in marriage to Ethelbert St. Clair. He lovingly accepted her children and became a proud father figure in their lives. They made their home in Robbinsdale, MN, Bemidji, MN, and then Thief River Falls, MN, for several years before returning to the White Earth Reservation. After retiring from baking, Lyle began working as a Security Guard at the Shooting Star Casino until 2015. Ethelbert passed away in 2002 and Lyle continued to make his home in Naytahwaush.

Although Lyle didn’t like to venture to far from home, he loved to be around family and friends. He enjoyed the company, a good meal and a cold can of beer! He liked to play cards, Keno and watch Nascar. Lyle also enjoyed listening to country music and his radio was always tuned in to 102.3. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Lyle is survived by one son, Gerry Neadeau of Hawley, MN; three daughters: Marie (Peep) Neadeau of Red Lake, MN, Sue Neadeau of Thief River Falls, MN, and Terri Lynn (Dave) Neadeau also of Red Lake; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert “Scrub” (Kathy) Goodwin of Naytahwaush; three sisters: Ann (John) LaVoy also of Naytahwaush, Gloria “Tudy” Nepstad and Lois “Petey” Olson both of Mahnomen; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Ethelbert, he was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Marilyn; son-in-law, Mike Randberg; two brothers and sister-in-law: Charles “Butch” Goodwin and George “Dode” (Katherine “Honey”) Goodwin Jr.; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Juanita (Emmaneul) Ortiz and Carol “Jeanne” (Leonard “Sonny”) McDougall; brothers-in-law, Myles “Ole” Olson and Leland Nepstad.

Blessed be the memory of Lyle Goodwin.
