NIEA's Hill Day awarded $25k Grant for Advocacy Training and Confirms Four Congressional Speakers Including Deb Haaland and Sharice Davids

Washington, D.C.- In just a few days, tribal leaders, educators, students, community members and advocates will travel from rural and urban areas to the Nation’s Capitol to speak with legislators about the educational needs of Native students. This year, National Indian Education Association (NIEA) is excited to announce Hill Day attendees will hear directly from four members of Congress, Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR), Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, and the first two Native women elected to the U.S. Congress, Rep. Sharice Davids (D-KS) and Rep. Deb Haaland (D-NM).

“[NIEA is] honored by the tremendous support demonstrated by Congressional members Schrader, Haaland, Bonamici, and Davids. NIEA appreciates their commitment to address critical education needs for underserved communities,” said Diana Cournoyer, NIEA Executive Director.

NIEA, was just awarded $25k from ETS, a nonprofit educational assessment and research organization. The funding, provided by the organization’s Center for Advocacy and Philanthropy, will support advocacy training on key issues related to Native education, culture and language. Based in Washington DC, ‘Hill Day,’ is an immersive legislative experience that creates dialogue and honest testimony regarding the status of Native education. NIEA and partner organizations will share impactful narratives with federal leadership. Sessions provide attendees with valuable tools for effective advocacy during meetings with legislators prearranged and guided by NIEA legislative staff.

Opportunities for networking have expanded to include an exclusive reception co-hosted by NIEA and the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC). Spaces are limited for this event and preregistration for NIEA Hill Day is encouraged for guaranteed access.

All NIEA Hill Day events are hosted at the Holiday Inn Washington-Capitol in Washington, D.C., and on Capitol Hill. Go to http://www.niea.org/programs/head-to-the-hill/ for more information and to register for NIEA Hill Day. Preregistration is encouraged to guarantee access to high security areas.
