Temper tantrums, acting out, shutting down. They’re phrases every parent and teacher should know well as common, childish behavior. There’s a reason we don’t expect adolescents to behave like adults: Their minds aren’t yet up to the task.

So, when 16-year-old Ashlynn Avery fell asleep at her desk while reading a book in a Hoover High School classroom, the reaction that ensued was inexplicable. The teen who suffers from a combination of diabetes, sleep apnea and asthma, was shoved into a filing cabinet and handcuffed by a school resource officer. The officer then called the police.
