Field Museum celebrates Native American Heritage Month with activities throughout the month of November

As part of our ongoing efforts to tell the stories and contemporary experiences of the Native American community, the museum is celebrating Native American Heritage Month. As we embark on our journey to renovate our Native North America Hall with community partners, the museum will be activating the space in new ways to foster dialogue.

On November 13 join museum staff for a host of activities from 12–2pm

• Take a behind the scenes look into our Native North America Hall deinstallation work. Members of the public can stop by the lab to chat with our conservators and technicians about the work they are doing with the cultural materials deinstalled from the hall.

• Examine quillwork and beadwork items from our collection and see beading demonstrations with our Native American staff.

• Watch a presentation of Nêhiyawak-asâsowiwin (Cree Tattooing), Sacred Art and Ecology of the Plains Cree in the Science Hub.

On November 15 visit the Science Hub for a hands-on activity from 11am–2pm

• Assistant Conservator Dan Kaping will discuss the uses of fiber analysis with Native American cultural materials.

On November 16 join us for a culminating celebration from 11am–3pm

• Watch cultural dance and musical performances in Stanley Field Hall performed by community members.

• Take a behind the scenes tour of our Native North America Hall lab. Members of the public can stop by the lab to chat with our conservators and technicians about the work they are doing with the cultural materials deinstalled from the hall.

• Create traditional corn husk dolls and other family activities in the hall guided by community members.

• Visit the Pawnee Earth Lodge for storytelling.

Throughout the month the Bistro will offer a Native American inspired menu including

• Three variety of stews; green chili beef with hominy and potatoes, chicken and wild rice, and the Three Sisters Stews, a vegetarian stew with pinto and black beans

• Sides and soups include wild rice pilaf, sweet potato puree, sweet corn succotash, corn muffins, and corn poblano soup

All of the above programmings are free with Field Museum Basic Admission. As part of ongoing free days, Wednesday, November 15, will be free Basic Admission for Illinois residents. Proof of residency is required.
