ECONONMIC DEVELOPMENT & PLANNING

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Farm Manager is responsible for daily planning, organization, supervision and administration of activities on the Incubator Farm. Additional duties may include management and general maintenance of the farm and its equipment. Reports to EDP Director, full-time seasonal position w/benefits, salary; $17.00 hrly.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

• Take the lead on training of Incubator Farmers, guiding them through their first experiences and education as a new farmer.

• Oversee the direction and coordination of the Farmer Trainees on crop production and operations, such as planning, tilling, planting, fertilizing, cultivating, spraying, or harvesting; and worker activities, such as planting, irrigation, organic application.

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of pests and diseases; to share and implement that knowledge.

• Assist with monitoring of crop activities based on crop maturity and environmental conditions.

• Inspect orchards and fields to determine crop maturity and condition, and to detect disease or insect infestation.

• Monitor and adjust irrigation systems to distribute water according to crop needs and to avoid wasting water.

• Assist with proper budgeting and maintaining of accurate financial records, including expenditures and payroll; and with monitoring and planning of farm profitability and projected financial targets and product goals.

• Take the lead on preparing land for planting, caring for the crops and harvesting.

• Plan for contract services needed for raising of crops or for management of crop production.

• Assist with the purchase of crops, materials, supplies, and equipment where needed.

• Assist with sale of crops, such as prep and delivery.

• Help implement necessary policies and procedures of the incubator farm and its equipment.

• Manage and carry out duties associated with the day-to-day and long-term management of the incubator farm; ensuring the farm incubator runs efficiently and profitably.

• Assist with annual and seasonal planning of the farm.

• Oversee compliance with applicable government regulations and health and safety standards.

• Coordinate any needed maintenance/repair of farm property, equipment and machinery.

• Assist with advertising and marketing of farm program and products and work with Marketing Coordinator as needed for the farm.

• Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

• Qualification in agriculture: a foundation degree, HND or degree in a subject like agriculture or farm business management.

• Healthy body: able to lift, dig, pull, and push heavy weights, able to be in the sun, and in a variety of weather situations.

• Practical farming experience, gained as a supervisor, unit manager, or assistant manager.

• Business savvy, with analytical and critical thinking skills, along with people skills.

• Organizational skills with creativity to visualize the future needs of the farm and food markets.

• Have good work ethics, with initiative and flexibility to work in a fast paced environment.

• Excellent communication skills, with a teamwork attitude and strong leadership skills.

• Organic Integrity: a strong supporter and ambassador of organic methods and long-term stewardship of our natural resources.

• Employment is contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug test and background check.
