Lavonne Mae Alberts, "Tate Heciya Pa Win" (Head Against the Wind Woman) 62 of the Spirit Lake Nation, began her journey to the Spirit World on Friday evening, November 1, 2019 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. She began her journey on earth on March 1, 1957 at Devils Lake, ND the daughter of Lawrence Joshua Jr. and Winona Fox.

Lavonne attended the Fort Totten Community School, Devils Lake High School and then returned to the Fort Totten Community School, graduating in 1975. After graduating, Lavonne served in the United States Army until her honorable discharge in 1976. After her discharge, she worked in several departments for the Spirit Lake Tribe including Tribal Social Services and also LIHEAP.

Lavonne could be strong willed and shared very definite opinions on many subjects but she was never too busy to help someone in need. She would drop whatever she was doing, or skip a scheduled event or get together to help her family, her friends or a stranger. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she loved them with all her heart, always being there for them.

Lavonne's loving family include her mother Winona Fox; children Lawrence George Alberts, Dale Quentin Alberts, Maurice Paige Alberts, Jocelyn Lee Alberts, Phillip Jerome Alberts, Preston Yankton, Scott Yankton, Relinda Herald, Desmond Cameron, Desarae Cameron and Tamarack Abraham; sisters Lenore Whitelightning, Leann Fox, Ladonna Fox, Debi Nesbitt, Reaba Mack, Marcella Longie and Myra Pearson; brothers Laidman Fox Jr., William Broncheau, Richard Street, Al Demery and Russell McDonald; grandchildren Jarin Thomas, Dominic Elden, Stephanie Amber, Alexa Mae, Dasan Alexander, Zachariah Skylar, Daija Rose, Hannah Elizabeth, Karrah Ann, Ciara Dawn, Quentin Dale, Lailah Josephine, Geroge Ethan, Sylvester Jerome and Sophia Odel Alberts, Chloe Rose and Zoey Rose Demarce, Kahlel Michael, Lachlan Maurice, Ares James, Paige Elise, Ava Ann, Gabriellenne Ainsley, Logan Dean, Quinn Olivia, Naomi Joy, LaRaina Isabel and Annalissa Stella Alberts, Joely Michelle and Alexander Kyler Good Iron, Phillip Jerome and Khalen Joseph Alberts, Lynn Lawrence and Ryder James Aguilar; great grandchild Skylar Zayn Alberts; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lavonne was preceded in death by her father Lawrence Joshua Jr., sisters Lynn SpottedWolf, Laverne Fox and Linda Fox, brothers Leonard Fox and Lee Fox and great grandchild Skylar James Lewis.

The Wake will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at the Fort Totten Wellness Center with a time of remembrance at 8:00 p.m. The procession to Fort Totten will leave on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. from the City Plaza. Gathering of family and friends will continue through the night and end at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6th. Military Honors will be accorded by the Spirit Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6547. Burial will be held at a later date.

Special Tributes: All singers, Drum Groups and Speakers are welcome to share their songs and stories in memory of Lavonne.
