What is a Restaurant?

The August issue of Minnesota Employment Review is now available.

Restaurants play a unique role in our economy. They're a support service for other industries – recreation or office workers – and an attraction in themselves. Sometimes they sell atmosphere or an experience. Barriers to entry for new establishments can affect a quick trend makeover. What are those historical trends, and how are they changing? How are Minnesota restaurants different from other states or nationally? Location Patterns of Restaurants takes a big bite into the topic.

It's not the largest employing industry in Southeast Minnesota; however, Agriculture plays a role in the region’s economy. Three main sub-sectors – Crop Production; Animal Production and Aquaculture; and Support Activities for Agriculture and Forestry – have all seen job growth over the last 10 years.
