The results might seem surprising, given that student test scores are normally higher in wealthier suburban districts than they are in poorer, urban districts. But those scores speak more to what happens outside the classroom than how schools are performing, researchers say.

Even though disadvantaged students in poorer school districts might earn lower test scores than those in wealthier districts, students in both settings show the same academic improvement, according to a new study by researchers at Ohio State University.
