PRIMARY FUNCTION

The main focus is to teach and speak only Ojibwe in an Early Education setting. To develop and implement Ojibwemowin learning activities for students, families and community at large. Reports to: Immersion Director, full-time position with benefits, salary; DOQ.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

• Incorporate traditional Ojibwe teachings into curriculum in conjunction with Head Start benchmarks, state standards and expectations.

• Work with program staff on Ojibwemowin learning activities for the purpose of increasing Ojibwemowin knowledge and retention in the immersion classrooms.

• Work with program staff and participant's in curriculum development.

• Participate in Ojibwe Advisory Committee meetings and collaborate with the Committee members, associated teachers, and or other personnel, to develop curriculum.

• Coordinate efforts to create language assessments and student progress markers in the Ojibwe language.

• Develop song books, tapes, and singing activities for curriculum and translate or create reading books/materials.

• Apply common sense understanding of detailed written or oral instructions.

• Establish clear roadmaps for teachers and other related personnel to follow per the given curriculum.

• Participate in staff development and Ojibwemowin planning activities as needed.

• Ability to work in small groups or one-on-one for Ojibwemowin learning activities.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's Degree in Education or other related field with emphasis in Anishinaabe Studies or Ojibwe Teacher Training preferred.

• Minimum of three (3) years teaching experience preferred.

• Must demonstrate intermediate oral and written Ojibwemowin proficiency.

• Knowledge and/or experience in immersion instructional methodology preferred.

• Must be punctual and professional in all job related activities.

• Must have strong communication skills and professionally articulate plans and ideas with team.

• Have commitment and drive for Ojibwe language revitalization.

• Ability to work closely and effectively with Elders and small children.

• Able to maintain good working relationships with staff, partners, parents, volunteers and others.

• Have knowledge of computer, word, excel, and other computer software programs and other office equipment.

• Ability to travel in and out of state, valid MN driver's license and auto insurance.

• Employment contingent upon successfully passing Pre-Employment Drug/Alcohol Test and Background Check.
