Government-to-Government Tribal-State Relations Training hosted by Red Lake Nation - P3

RED LAKE, MN - A two-day training seminar was hosted by the Red Lake Tribe on Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at the Red Lake Nation College.

Facilitated by Dr. Joseph Bauerkemper, Associate Profession, University of Minnesota-Duluth, after the opening ceremony and invocation, Red Lake Tribal Chairman Darrell Seki Sr. and Lower Sioux Indian Community President Robert Larson, welcomed state employees and others to the first day of the session, and Dr. Bauerkemper gave an introduction and overview of the program.

Presentations were made by Nate Taylor, Red Lake Immersion Program coordinator on the Native Language; Treaties by Michelle Paquin, Red Lake Legal Department; Federal Indian Policy and the Legal Background between the Tribes and States by Todd Johnson, Esq., University of Minnesota-Duluth; and A Closer Look at Tribal Lands - explanation with question and answer discussion.

Day two of the program included discussions about Indian Boarding Schools, Red Lake Nation Tribal History and Culture, State Agency Tribal Liaisons, a Red Lake Nation Tribal Staff members panel and a Tribal Leader Panel Presentation: Consulting and Building Partnerships with American Indians, presented by Chairman Seki, President Larson and Faron Jackson Sr., Chairman of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.
