John M. Gehay

April 09, 1950 - August 07, 2019

John M. Gehay, age 69, of Mahnomen, MN, died Wednesday, August 7, 2019, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND.

John, the son of John C. and June (Molten) Gehay, was born on April 9, 1950 in Enid Oklahoma. He spent his early childhood following his father’s Air Force career, spending several years living in England. The family then returned home to Enid where John was raised and graduated from High School. Following his schooling, John began working in the oil fields. In 1991, John was united in marriage to Barbara Schonhardt. They made their home in Enid until 1996, at which time they moved to Mahnomen to be closer to Barb’s family. Although he didn’t like the snow, John did enjoy the four seasons and the beauty of Northern Minnesota. He began working at the Tesoro Gas Station, where he was assistant manager until his retirement in 2005.

John enjoyed the simple things in life and always brought a smile to any situation. His quick wit and “take me as I am” personality shown through to all who met him. He loved to quietly relax in his chair, while snacking on cookies, watching Mash and John Wayne on tv. If anyone was willing to play, John never turned down a game of cards. He spent many hours playing cribbage, poker and blitz. He was also known to try his luck at pull tabs and scratch off tickets. John enjoyed working in his garden and knew his way around the kitchen. He often prepared great meals and wonderful treats for family and friends. John also had a special place in his heart for his dear cats. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

John is survived by his wife, Barbara of Mahnomen; his son, Trent (Sandy) Petersen of Clayton, NC; three grandchildren, Ivana, Gabbi, and Trent Jr; one brother; seven sisters; two sisters-in-law; aunt, Betty Schonhardt; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
