JOB TITLE: Student Engagement and Enrichment Specialist - Beginning the 2019-20 SY

BUILDING: District Wide

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Services & Building Principal

JOB PURPOSE: The Student Engagement and Enrichment Specialist shall structure and implement engagement and enrichment activities and instruction, based in student strengths, to facilitate increased student engagement for students across the district who are identified as needing additional supports, which may include students who are enrolled in nontraditional/alternative programs, students who are gifted and talented, students who are identified as needing an individualized support plan to assist in removing non-school barriers to attendance and achievement, and any other students as determined by building and district administration.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Student Engagement and Enrichment Specialist shall:

1. Hold or be eligible for a valid Minnesota teaching license. Preference given to candidates who hold or who are willing to work toward a Work-Based Learning license, Technology endorsement, Social Work license, School Counselor license, and to those with coursework specific to gifted and talented programming and instruction.

2. Have previous successful experience or show willingness and excitement in working with Native American children and youth aged 5 – 21.

3. Have previous successful experience teaching gifted and talented programming, work-based learning activities, enrichment programming, and/or providing small group or individualized mental health supports.

4. Demonstrate a strong moral character and impeccable work ethic.

JOB DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITES

1. Coach and work alongside peers in providing enrichment and engagement opportunities and supports to students.

2. Use and apply a wide variety of culturally- and developmentally-appropriate practices, teaching strategies, and curriculum materials to support learners who demonstrate need for additional supports through enrichment or engagement opportunities and activities.

3. Apply MN Standards to instruction and curriculum.

4. Work with district staff and programs as well as outside agencies to develop experiential learning opportunities for students enrolled in the district's alternative and nontraditional programs.

5. Work with district staff and programs as well as outside agencies to develop and monitor students' graduation and post-graduation plans.

6. Work with district staff and programs as well as outside agencies and students' families to develop and monitor individualized support plans to assist in addressing non-school barriers to attendance and achievement.

7. Provide small group or individualized interventions to students to maintain engagement through addressing exploration of student strengths, talents, and aptitudes.

8. Collect, analyze and interpret formative and summative data.

9. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

10. Work as an effective member of professional learning teams, grade level teams, and participate as a contributing member on site committees.

11. Engage in data driven decision making and data driven instruction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Engage, model for, and support students and staff in learning by providing for a variety of learning styles and ability levels.

2. Create, model, and maintain effective active learning environments for students.

3. Understand and organize subject matter with a focus on enhancing student engagement and attendance and extending learning beyond state standards and current district curriculum.

4. Employ technology to enhance instruction.

5. Assess students for learning in accordance with district and state requirements.

6. Develop as a professional educator.

7. Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and community.

8. Support and abide by school and district policies and procedures.

9. Perform other related duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND ABILITES

1. Utilize proper English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and speaking skills.

2. Ability to learn and use Ojibwemowin words and phrases as well as support students in their learning of the language.

3. Knowledge of district policies, rules, and regulations.

4. Work with students, district personnel, and general public in a pleasant and cooperative manner.

5. Understand and follow complex oral and written instruction and completes assignments in an independent manner.

6. Analyze situations and take appropriate action regarding routine/emergency procedural matters without immediate supervision.

7. Plan, organize, and coordinate assigned tasks to meet established timelines.

8. Maintain professional confidentiality and work collaboratively with peers.

9. Possess knowledge of technology to present lessons, communicate with others, and keep records.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Stand, walk, bend over, kneel, crouch, reach, overhead, grasp, push, and pull. Move, lift, and/or carry up to 30 lbs. to should height.

2. Repetitive use of hands (i.e. fine manipulation, simple grasping, and power grasping).

3. Stand, sit, and/or walk for extended periods of time.

4. Demonstrates normal depth perception.

5. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, operate standard office equipment, and use a telephone.

6. See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without visual aids.

VERIFICATION OF COMPETENCY

1. District application and professional resume completed and submitted.

2. Provide documentation of licensure credentials.

3. Provide the letters of reference from education professionals.
