"Bridging" Delivers to Red Lake Family & Children Services

Last week, Bridging, a nonprofit organization from the Twin Cities, traveled to Red Lake Family and Children Services on Red Lake Nation delivering two semi-trucks full of quality used furniture to families in need on the Nation.

Bridging provides household items such as beds, upholstered furntiture, dressers, wood furniture, lamps, kitchen table/chairs, small appliances, bedding, and more providing household stability to families. To date, Red Lake Family and Children Services and Bridging have furnished 76 households for the Red Lake Nation.

Kelly Harding, Client Services Manager of Bridging, shared how honored and privileged she is to partner with Red Lake Nation. Cheri Goodwin, Director of Red Lake Family and Children Services, emphasized that social change is happening, and it is through partnerships like Bridging, that they are progressively working with the community.

Historically, Family and Children Services was modeled by dominant society policies that emphasized punitive approaches. This way of thinking does not align with Anishinaabeg values, traditions, and beliefs.

Today, Family and Children Services is exerting sovereignty in their approach to helping families. One goal of Family and Children services is to build relationships with the community. Family and Children Services believes partnering with other organizations, that are equally passionate about helping families, is a step in the right direction toward an appreciative inquiry model. Working together to instill hope for Red Lake Nation by furnishing one household at a time.
