Gov. Tim Walz and top DFL and Republican lawmakers arrived at a hard-fought spending deal Sunday without the controversial gas tax hike the governor sought, ending a weekslong impasse over a two-year state budget.
The spending package, topping out at more than $48 billion, denied Walz much of the new revenue he wanted for road improvements, but left mostly intact a health care tax that Republicans sought to end.
